DESCRIPTION:One of the most pervasive challenges in modern biology is to u
nderstand how\nthe physical structure of a system dictates its function\,
especially during\ndevelopment. Over the past two-decades\, imaging based
microscopy methods\nhave been transformed from a disparate set of optical
and electron imaging\ntechniques to a cohesive array of primary tools that
  allow the determination of\nphysical structures at a sub-cellular level\,
and how that structure can change\nover time at high spatial resolution.
Length scales from whole organisms to single\nmolecules and time scales fr
om molecular diffusion to organ growth can studied\nwith ease. Particular
emphasis will be given in this discussion on the use of light\nand electro
n-based imaging techniques in the study of developmental processes\nin viv
 o.\n
