DESCRIPTION:Processes involving recurrent events arise in many contexts\, 
 and there is often an interest in the presence and nature of time trends. 
 In this talk I will discuss concepts of trend in processes of recurrent ev
 ents\, and methods for assessing and modelling trend. Pitfalls in the exam
 ination of trend will be considered and in particular\, the role of unattr
 ibuted heterogeneity across multiple individuals. An examination of trends
  in the pattern of repeated psychiatric hospitalization episodes for perso
 ns with affective disorder will be described.
