DESCRIPTION:A social representations approach to the study of Intergroup C
ontact can enrich the mainstream work around contact hypothesis originally
proposed by Allport (1954) by introducing a more nuanced approach to the
way contact and representations are articulated . After situating the Cypr
us issue in its historical context I present an analysis of present identi
ty positions\, within each community\, as perspectives on intergroup relat
ions that canalise the past-present-future transition and discuss how repr
esentation of the past can be conceptualised as laying the ground for the
emergence of resistance (Duveen\,2001)in relation to the potential of con
tact to lead to the reduction of prejudice and promotion of trust.
