DESCRIPTION:Liquid-liquid unmixing and the separation of Fe- and Si-rich l
iquids occur during the\nevolution of tholeiitic basalt to rhyolite. We wi
ll report evidence from plutonic and volcanic\nsettings to revive the init
ial idea by Daly to explain the dearth of intermediate magmatic\ncompositi
ons at the Earth’s surface. New crystallization experiments on evolved t
holeiitic\nbasalts are used to define the compositional space for the deve
lopment of silicate liquid\nimmiscibility on liquid lines of descent relev
ant for typical fractionated MORB\, Iceland\,\nDeccan\, Mull and Snake Riv
er Plain lavas and for the Sept Iles layered intrusion where large-\nscale
immiscibility has been recognized. Crystallization conditions favouring o
r inhibiting the\ndevelopment of immiscibility will be discussed\, as well
as implications for magma chamber\nprocesses and tholeiitic liquid trends
