DESCRIPTION:C4 photosynthesis involves changes to the biochemistry\, cell
biology and morphology of leaves. Current estimates indicate that the C4 p
athway has evolved at least sixty two times independently in plants. Our u
nderstanding of many C4 lineages is limited by the lack of a reference seq
uence. We used the closest C4 plant to Arabidopsis\, Cleome gynandra as a
model for C4 photosynthesis. RNA-seq was performed on both Cleome gynandra
(C4) and Cleome hassleriana (C3) to profile transcripts of leaves at diff
erent stages of development as well as from specific cell. Many changes du
ring evolution from C3 to C4 involved cell specialization between mesophyl
l and bundle-sheath cells. Candidate genes involved in the development or
regulation of C4 photosynthesis including some transcriptional regulators
 are being currently studied.
