DESCRIPTION:Interpersonal violence\, especially homicide and serious viole
nce\, is considered the most serious and most feared crime and much of wes
tern criminological studies have been helpful in unravelling some of the c
ommon factors associated with this phenomenon. Recent global violence prev
ention efforts are based on a belief about the universality of the common
risk factors identified in mainly Western societies. Limiting analysis to
adolescent violence\, this paper compares results from a study in Ghana wi
th findings from two influential Western studies -the Cambridge Study in D
elinquent Development and the Pittsburgh Youth Study -in order to assess t
he extent of cross-cultural replicability of risk factors for adolescent v
iolence. Results show important similarities but also differences\, especi
ally in the area of family variables.
