DESCRIPTION:In this session I will develop an argument for schools as demo
cratic institutions in which the partnership between adults and young peop
le takes seriously Dewey’s notion that democracy is a ‘mode of associa
ted living embedded in the culture and social relationships of everyday li
fe’. I suggest a 10 point framework for democracy and illustrate key poi
nts with examples from primary\, secondary and special school contexts. So
me examples deliberately draw on radical democratic traditions of educatio
n in publicly funded schools\, thus countering ‘the enormous condescensi
on of posterity’ so typical of contemporary neo-liberalism which puts it
s faith in an increasingly desperate insistence that There Is No Alternati
 ve.
