DESCRIPTION:Neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinso
 n’s diseases arguably\nrepresent the greatest challenge to the social fa
 bric and health care systems of much of\nthe modern world. The predominant
  reason for their rapidly increasing prevalence is the\nincrease in longev
 ity that has resulted from the tremendous advances in public health\nand h
 ygiene and in medical and surgical interventions over the last century. Bu
 t the\nnature of neurodegenerative disorders is quite different from those
  of most other types\nof disease\, and indeed there are at present no cure
 s or even highly effective treatments.\nVery significant advances have\, h
 owever\, been made recently in our understanding of\nthe fundamental molec
 ular origins of these conditions\, and are now suggesting new and\nrationa
 l therapeutic strategies by which to combat their onset and progression. T
 his talk\nwill discuss recent approaches to this end that we are currently
  exploring in the context of\nmolecular and cellular biophysics.
