DESCRIPTION:This seminar comes out of a small-scale research project still
  in progress\, \nfunded by the British Academy\, into the teaching of poet
 ry in schools\, \ncolleges and universities within the local Cambridge are
 a. We were \nparticularly interested in perceptions of the challenges invo
 lved\, how they\n change in relation to different age groups\, and what ex
 pectations there\nare of children's knowledge\, engagement and expertise i
 n relation \nto poetry as they move through successive stages of their edu
 cation. \nThe investigation focused on the areas of: reception and memory\
 ; \nunderstanding and interpretation\; writing poetry\; teaching technical
  \naspects\; and curricular and institutional pressures. We will present o
 ur \ninitial findings and explore some emerging implications. \n
