DESCRIPTION:We present recent numerical results on SU(N) gauge theories in
 \nthe large N limit. In particular\, we discuss the glueball and meson\nsp
 ectra and the deconfinement phase transition. The data suggest a\nsmooth l
 arge N limit for physical observables\, with finite N effects\naccounted f
 or by a controlled power expansion in 1/N. Possible\nimplications of these
  findings for gauge string duality programmes aimed\nat an analytical desc
 ription of non-perturbative QCD are also discussed.
