DESCRIPTION:The recently fashionable theories of positive psychology have
educational ramifications at virtually every level of engagement\, culmina
ting in the \nmodel of 'positive education'. In this critical review\, I s
crutinize positive \neducation as a potential theory in educational psycho
logy. Special attention is given to conceptual controversies and suggested
educational \ninterventions. Positive psychologists have yet to explore i
n detail the school as a positive institution.\n They have written at leng
th\, however\, about such positive personal traits as moral virtue and res
iliency\, and about positive emotions both as embodied in experiences of c
lassroom 'flow' and as \nfacilitators of students' personal resources. Bec
ause the empirical evidence concerning these positive factors remains part
ly mixed or tentative\, and \nbecause most of them had a home in other the
oretical frameworks before the advent of positive psychology\, searching q
uestions remain about the effectiveness and \noriginality of positive educ
ation. I address some of those questions.\n\n\nForthcoming dates for philo
sophical approaches to education seminar series: \n\n10th May\, Professor
