DESCRIPTION:The ORCHID project at the Universities of Southampton\, Oxford
and Nottingham is addressing the challenge of building computational syst
ems in which software agents and people interact. In this talk\, I'll give
a brief overview of the project and then present two concrete examples of
work to date. First\, that of building a decentralised system for coordin
ating unmanned autonomous vehicles that uses loopy belief propagation and
the max-sum algorithm to assign tasks to UAV\, and second\, that of buildi
ng a home energy management agent that mixes both physical and statistical
models of the thermal properties of a home\, in order to provide househol
ds with realtime feedback about heating costs.
