DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT\nIn recent years\, North Korea has collected an impre
ssive array of very\nunflattering superlatives. Whether it be the most “
 failed”\, “corrupt”\nor “undemocratic” state in the world\, it m
anages to frequently top (or\nbottom) such rankings and indexes. It’s a
pattern that emerges\nfrequently\, and often places North Korea just a few
places below\nSomalia which\, in the case of last year’s Failed States
Index (FSI)\nseemed to confusingly suggest that the two states were almost
as\n“failed” as each other. But just how accurate are these indexes w
hen\ninformation from the DPRK is so hard to obtain? And how do they effec
t\nour ability to engage with Pyongyang?\n
