DESCRIPTION:It is almost impossible to open a newspaper or turn on a telev
ision without being exposed to a report of dishonest behavior of one type
or another. Names such as Enron\, Tyco\, and Arthur Andersen provide extre
me examples\; other examples include cheating on taxes\, insurance fraud\,
and employee theft. This large number of instances of unethical behavior
raises the question of why people behave dishonestly. A possible answer is
  provided by a rational\, economics-based framework\, according to which i
ndividuals engage in a cost-benefit calculation that leads to the ultimate
decision about dishonesty. In this talk\, I propose a different answer fo
r the question of why people behave dishonestly. I argue that a psychologi
cal perspective provides a more understanding of dishonesty. The talk will
cover recent evidence on the drivers that can lead even good people to cr
 oss ethical boundaries.
