DESCRIPTION:Professor Chris Goodnow is Professor and Head of the Dept of I
mmunology at the Australian National University’s John Curtin School of
Medical Research\, and Founding Director and CSO of the Australian Phenomi
cs Facility in Canberra. In May 2009 he was elected as a Fellow of the The
Royal Society.\nGoodnow “has pioneered in the field of immunology to re
veal key mechanisms regulating the immune system\, in particular the abili
ty of the immune system to learn to differentiate between our own “self
” tissues and invading foreign microbes. He has also revealed the capaci
ty of the immune system to lay down specific memory of both self and forei
gn\, so that autoimmunity is minimised while immunity to infection becomes
strong”. \nIn this lecture he will present unpublished work analysing
the acquisition of self-nonself discrimination by antibodies during germin
al center reactions\, and the impact of inherited and somatically acquired
mutations in genes that are critical for B and T cell tolerance.\n
