DESCRIPTION:The Gaussian free field (GFF) is a two-time dimensional analog
of Brownian motion and is the canonical model for a two-dimensional fluct
uating random interface. Just as the Brownian motion arises as the scaling
limit of many different types of random curves\, the GFF is the scaling l
imit of many different random surface models. Examples include the fluctua
tions of the dimer model and the log of the characteristic function of the
Ginibre ensemble (random matrix ensemble with iid complex Gaussian entrie
s). \n\nThis talk (one of three) will be an elementary introduction to the
  GFF and its basic properties.
