DESCRIPTION:This talk will firstly draw from a recent review of qualitativ
e research on men and depression\, focusing on how masculinity is used to
inform analyses of men’s' interview talk. Critiquing the deployment of a
nalyst categories\, and the reification of concepts like male and depresse
d\, it is argued that researchers should focus instead on those categories
made relevant by men themselves\, preferably in naturalistic settings whe
re researchers are absent. To illustrate\, data from an online all-male su
pport forum for depression will be presented. Drawing from discursive psyc
hology and membership categorisation analysis\, I consider how men themsel
ves do being depressed\, and how peer support is negotiated in this enviro
 nment.
