DESCRIPTION:Kevin Magee\, MD of Proeon Systems\, will describe what is inv
olved in retrofitting modern controllers to old gas turbines\, such as tho
se used offshore for generation and pumping\, to upgrade performance and e
xtend operational life.\n\nThe control systems of industrial gas turbines
have seen significant changes over the past decade\, with the increasing u
se of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) for both OEM and retrofit appl
ications and where the engines are used for power generation\, gas compres
sion and oil pumping applications.\n\nThis presentation will look at how a
small controls engineering company developed standard general purpose con
trol strategies that can be adapted for application with aero-derivative a
nd heavy industrial gas turbines to deal with obsolescence\, improve perfo
rmance\, add diagnostics and hence extend the operational lifetime of the
engines and driven loads.\n\nKevin Magee co-founded Proeon Systems in 2003
to provide engineering design consultancy and software development for co
mplex gas turbine control applications. The company has grown year on year
to provide consultancy services\, design\, manufacture\, and support for
projects within the energy\, oil & gas and automation sectors.\n\nKevin ha
s extensive experience in the detailed and conceptual design of PLC\, PC a
nd SCADA systems as well as software\, communications systems\, control &
instrumentation systems and LV switchgear design.\n\nHe is a Chartered Ele
ctrical Engineer and is a Fellow of the IET. He has over 25 years’ exper
ience in detailed design\, project engineering\, engineering management an
d systems commissioning roles for a variety of industries.\n\nRefreshments
served from 18.30. Talk starts at 19.00. Ends by 21.00 following question
s and discussion.\n\nFree to attend. Registration not required. All welcom
e.\n\nThis talk is open to the public and is suitable for university stude
nts and engineers. You are encouraged to extend this invitation to collea
gues\, friends and members of your family who are interested in engineerin
 g. \n\nDirections to the IfM are at www.ifm.eng.cam.ac.uk/service/maps/\n\
nThere is ample free parking in the IfM's carpark beside the building. The
entrance is just past the IfM's service road.
