DESCRIPTION:One of the primary goals of arithmetic geometry is to find rat
 ional points on\nalgebraic varieties over arithmetically interesting field
 s in terms of computable invariants of\nthe variety. It is possible to int
 erpret this question as a determination of the fixed point set\nof a group
  action on a scheme using some homotopy type. I will talk about some of th
 e complex\nalgebraic geometry this philosophy leads us\, as well as some r
 elated stories over real closed\,\np-adic and global fields.
