DESCRIPTION:t is well known that holomorphic cycles minimize volume in the
 ir homology class in a compact Kahler manifold. I will quickly review some
  classical results about the attempt of proving the converse both in the p
 ositive (Siu-Yau\, Lawson-Simons) and some negative constructions.\n\nI wi
 ll present a new approach\, and an extension of this classical problem whi
 ch generates a new variational problem whose associated functional identif
 ies (pseudo-)holomorphic cycles. Joint work with J. Sun.\n\n
