DESCRIPTION:An orientable hyperbolic n-manifold is isometric to the quotie
 nt of hyper-\nbolic n-space H by a discrete torsion free subgroup of the g
 roup of\norientation-preserving isometries of H. Among these manifolds\, t
 he ones\noriginating from arithmetically defined groups form a family of 
 special\ninterest. Due to the underlying connections with number theory an
 d the\ntheory of automorphic forms\, there is a fruitful interaction betwe
 en\ngeometric and arithmetic questions\, methods and results. We intend to
  give\nan account of recent investigations in this area\, in particular\, 
 of those\npertaining to hyperbolic 3-manifolds and bounds for their Betti 
 numbers.\n
