DESCRIPTION:The words "topos theory" seem to strike unnecessary fear in th
 e hearts of mathematicians. I shall try to defuse some of this apprehensio
 n by explaining what a topos is in simple terms and why they are interesti
 ng. We will see three aspects of the elephant in this talk: toposes as mat
 hematical universes\, toposes as generalised spaces\, and toposes as geome
 tric theories.\n\nThis talk should be considered as a trailer for the Part
  III Topos Theory reading course happening this term.
