DESCRIPTION:The paper \\\\\\'Effective Communication with one or two butto
 ns\\\\\\' (MacKay\,Ball & Donegan\, 2004) describes how Dasher could be dr
iven by discrete button pushes rather than continuous movements in two di
rections. One of the prototypes discussed has already been implemented: a
two-button menu version of Dasher in which each button push corresponds t
o either a cycling between or a choosing of different zooming options. Th
e preliminary results of the first round of novice training sessions will
be presented and human performance compared to the optimum performance rat
es predicted by information theory. Another prototype suggested by the pa
per is a time-critical\, one-button mode. A preliminary investigation int
o the operational parameters that would need to be incorporated into such
 modes is discussed.\n\nThe original paper\, \\\\\\'Effective Communication
with one or two buttons\\\\\\'\, can be downloaded from:\n\nhttp://www.in
