DESCRIPTION:Finite element methodology\, reinforced by deep mathematical\n
analysis\, provides one of the most important and powerful toolsets\nfor n
umerical simulation. Over the past forty years a bewildering\nvariety of
different finite element spaces have been invented to\nmeet the demands of
many different problems. The relationship\nbetween these finite elements
has often not been clear\, and the\ntechniques developed to analyze them
can seem like a collection of\nad hoc tricks. The finite element exterior
calculus\, developed\nover the last decade\, has elucidated the requireme
nts for stable\nfinite element methods for a large class of problems\, cla
rifying\nand unifying this zoo of methods\, and enabling the development o
f\nnew finite elements suited to previously intractable problems.\nIn this
talk\, we will discuss the big picture that emerges\,\nproviding a sort o
f periodic table of finite element methods.
