DESCRIPTION:In the first century of powered flight\, and to this day\, the
re has never been another aircraft in operation\, civil or military of any
country\, which can do what Concorde did. There were\, and are\, aircraft
that can fly higher\, or go faster\, or carry more people or fly further\
, but none that can combine all those capabilities to fly at Mach2\, witho
ut refuelling\, across the Atlantic with one hundred passengers on board.\
n\nLooking back over those one hundred years and to the origins of Concord
e\, this talk explains why Concorde was such a technological achievement a
nd a commercial success in airline operation.\n\n*Captain David Rowland FR

on BAC 1-11 aircraft and after becoming a Training Captain and Instrument
Rating Examiner\, he returned to Concorde as a Captain and was appointed F
light Manager and then Commercial Manager and later General Manager of the
Fleet. He retired from British Airways in 1999.\n\nDavid has been a membe
r and past Chairman of the Royal Aeronautical Society’s Learned Society
Board and of the Flight Simulation Group. He was a founder committee membe
 r of the aviation industry’s environmental group\, Greener-by-Design and
