DESCRIPTION:His talk is focused on an approach to teach undergraduates abo
ut sustainability\, developed at the Warsaw University of Technology\, whi
ch includes an introductory course on the most important problems of susta
inable development\, and a set of examples\, given in other lecture course
s during the undergraduate education. In the introductory course problems
discussed are shortage of energy\, resources\, food (including water) and
deterioration of the environment. Problem solutions and appropriate measur
es related to chemical\nengineering and biotechnology will be discussed su
ch as membrane technologies for water purification\, biogas production fro
m wastes\, carbon dioxide removal and sequestration.\nProfessor Pohorecki
was head of the Chemical Reactor and Bioprocess\nEngineering Division\, an
d director of the Centre of Biotechnology. For several years he served as
Vice President for Science\, European Federation of\nChemical Engineering\
, and Vice President for Europe\, Alliance of Universities for Democracy.
He is member of the Polish Academy of Sciences\, honorary member of the Cz
ech Society of Chemical Engineering\, holder of the Purkyne Medal\, Czech
Academy of Sciences\, and Villermaux Medal\, European Federation of Chemic
al Engineering. He is author or co-author of 6 books\, and over 250 resear
ch papers. His main scientific interests include chemical reaction enginee
 ring and bioprocess engineering.
