DESCRIPTION:Abstract\n\nA sequential series of vocal studies units embedde
d in a tertiary contemporary music program provides unique challenges and
opportunities for musical learning and teaching in a group context. As pop
ular music styles are constantly evolving\, and as individuality\, creativ
ity and expressive techniques are featured aspects of contemporary vocal a
rtistry\, developing effective techniques and strategies to underpin stude
nt learning is a complex task. The developmental continuum outlined in thi
s discussion provides a distinct model that focuses directly on the alignm
ent of achievements and outcomes within a continuum of learning. The conti
nuum is based on formative development\, critical engagement and a resulta
nt level of practical autonomy. Included in the discussion is comprehensiv
e assessment\, with formative and summative considerations\, and related f
eedback mechanisms. Creative components and related assessment practices a
re also outlined. While the discussion focuses on a developmental continuu
m for learning and measuring student achievement in contemporary vocal stu
dies\, the teaching strategies\, assessment design and feedback methods ha
ve broader relevance to the learning and teaching of a range of contempora
ry musical practices. \n\nBionote\n\nDr Diane Hughes is a Lecturer in Voca
