DESCRIPTION:It has been 2.5 years since Weisi left the DTG\, and this 45 m
inute presentation gives an overview of 2 aspects of his work: low carbon
wireless communications (green radio)\, and the science of cities. In the
first part of the talk\, he will be presenting key trends in wireless inf
ormation technologies and show how his research has attempted to tackle th
e question: "how to grow wireless capacity with the smallest energy-cost e
xpenditure?" In the second part\, Weisi gives an overview of the next maj
or area of cross-discipline research: urban science. Weisi is the co-dire
ctor of the "Cities" research theme in Engineering\, he is driving an inte
rnational effort to use mathematics to make sense of the mechanisms inside
cities. As the first phase of that approach\, he is examining the role o
f mobile and fixed sensors that can extract big data from urban life. He
is in the process of setting up living urban laboratories in New York. T
he purpose of the talk is to encourage collaboration and discuss new ideas
