DESCRIPTION:*Abstract*\nThis presentation aims to introduce the concept of
  transmission of Cantonese opera in Hong Kong from school education to pro
 fessional training.  Starting with an introduction of the nature and chara
 cteristics of Cantonese opera with audio-video support\, different studies
  will be reported including an interview study on the transmission of the 
 genre through the oral tradition\, a study on teacher’s transformation o
 f their beliefs and perception of teaching the genre\, a study on students
 ’ transformation of their learning motivation\, and a study on how profe
 ssional artists are trained in the modern academy.  From the studies we ca
 n derive a big picture on how the genre can be transmitted through profess
 ional training and audience building\, which may provide references for ot
 her genres.\n\n*Bio*\nCurrently Associate Professor at the Hong Kong Insti
 tute of Education\, Dr Bo-Wah Leung received the prestigious Musical Right
 s Award from the International Music Council of UNESCO in 2011 for his lea
 dership in a research project entitled “Collaborative Project on Teachin
 g Cantonese Opera in Primary and Secondary Schools”.  Leung is a prolifi
 c writer and has published different research papers in leading journals a
 nd edited books.  He also serves as Board Member of International Society 
 for Music Education (ISME) and Asia-Pacific Symposium for Music Education 
 Research (APSMER)\, co-editor of the International Journal of Music Educat
 ion: Practice\, founding co-editor of Asia-Pacific Journal for Arts Educat
 ion\, and Specialist (Performing Arts and Education) of the Hong Kong Coun
 cil for Accreditation of Academic & Vocational Qualifications.
