SUMMARY:Nanotechnology for the Oilfield - James Tour\, BP Lecturer\, Rice
 University\, Houston

DESCRIPTION:The application of nanotechnology\, particularly carbon nanote
chnology\, to the oilfield will be discussed. Many of these projects are
being done in collaboration and sponsorship with oil and gas companies or
related consortia. The specific topics\, along with the partnering entiti
es\, that will be presented are:\n•	corrosion inhibitors (Multi-Chem/Hal
 liburton)\n•	nano-enhanced rubber (NanoComposites Inc.)\n•	downhole se
nsors (Advanced Energy Consortium = AEC)\n•	enhanced oil recovery at hig
h temperature and salinity (AEC for nano-based work\; seeking partner for
non-nano-based advanced surfactants)\n•	removal of asphaltenes (currentl
 y seeking a partner)\n•	capture of radionuclides from water-NORMs (VSW a
nd Argonide)\n•	nanoparticles for extraction of bitumen from surface min
able oil sands (BCE Oil Sands)\n•	drilling fluid loss prevention and con
ductive oil-based muds (MI SWACO-Schlumberger)\nCO2 capture especially for
  sea-based platforms (Apache) \n
