DESCRIPTION:*Abstract:*\nReal-world cryptographic systems rarely meet acad
emic\nexpectations\, with most systems' being shown "insecure" at some poi
nt. At\nthe same time\, our IT-driven world has not yet fallen apart\, sug
gesting that\nmany protection mechanisms are "secure enough" for how they
are employed.\n\nThis talk argues that hacks with real-world implications
are mostly the\nresult of being able to break security assumptions on mult
iple design\nlayers. Protection designs that focus on a single security fu
nction and\nneglect complimentary layers are hence more prone to compromis
e.\n\nWe look at three widely deployed protection systems from the cell ph
one\,\nautomotive\, and smart-card domains and show how technology abuse a
rises\nfrom the combination of best-practice deviations on multiple design
layers.\n\n*Bio:*\nKarsten Nohl is a cryptographer and security researche
r with a degree\nin Computer Engineering from UVa. Karsten likes to test s
ecurity assumptions\nin proprietary systems and typically breaks them.
