DESCRIPTION:*Abstract:* Suburbanization in Central and Eastern European ci
ties has become the predominant form of metropolitan growth\, undermining
seriously the application of sustainable urban development principles in t
he region. The negative impacts of sprawl are just beginning to emerge as
an area of public concern in the post-socialist cities where urban growth
is managed through a mixture of uncoordinated and often conflicting polici
es. The presentation investigates the impact of contemporary public polici
es on the patterns of urban growth in Central and Eastern European cities\
, highlighting both commonalities and variations in the post-socialist res
ponses to the challenges of growth management in the beginning of the twen
ty-first century.\n\n*Biography:* Kiril Stanilov holds a PhD in Urban Desi
gn and Planning from the University of Washington. From 1998 to 2008 he wa
s a faculty member at the University of Cincinnati where he taught courses
in urban design\, physical planning\, and contemporary urbanisation. He i
s a senior research associate at the Martin Centre for Architectural and U
rban Studies. Kiril Stanilov’s research interests are centred on explora
tions of contemporary patterns of urban growth and change\, and the role p
layed by public policies in shaping urban form transformations. His book p
ublications include: Twenty Years of Transition\, The Post-Socialist City\
, Suburban Form\, and Confronting Suburbanization.
