DESCRIPTION:While it is generally assumed that quantum mechanics accuratel
 y describes the whole of chemistry\, materials science\, biology and much 
 of physics it is impossible to solve the equations of quantum mechanics ex
 actly to prove this assertion. In this talk\, Prof. Mike Payne will descri
 be the techniques that have been developed that do allow us to use quantum
  mechanics to predict the behaviour of a vast range of systems and will ex
 plain why these approaches have been adopted by industry.
