DESCRIPTION:The materials that we depend on rely upon ever-increasing stru
ctural complexity for their function. Designing complex materials for thes
e devices through the art of chemical synthesis brings challenges and oppo
rtunities. The use of chemical self-assembly as a synthetic technique can
simplify materials preparation by shifting intellectual effort away from d
esigning molecules\, and towards the design of _chemical systems_ that are
capable of self-assembling in such a way as to express the desired materi
als properties. This talk will focus upon the design of self-assembly proc
esses that can bring together simple\, organic molecules and first-row tra
nsition-metal ions into complex\, functional structures.\n\n*Entry is free
to all and free refreshments will be provided.*
