DESCRIPTION: R.J. Henderson\, Churchill College: "Redundancy
in Turing machines"\n Tim Ward\, St Catharine's: "A two button imple
mentation of Dasher"\nMike Baker: \nRelationships between energy and infor
mation in fly retina\n\n\nAbstract for 3rd talk: Retinal photoreceptors an
d neurons use significant amounts of\nenergy to capture and code optical i
nformation and also adjust their\ngains to match prevailing light levels.
This project applies information\ntheory to biophysical models of signalli
ng in fly retina to test whether\nphotoreceptors adjust their gains to opt
imise their energy efficiency.\nThe theoretical predictions can be tested
by recording electrical\nsignals from fly photoreceptors\, measuring how t
hey adjust their gain in\nresponse to changing light levels and estimating
their energy\nconsumption from their input resistance. The project provid
es an\naccessible introduction to neural coding and systems biology\, and
(if\ndesired) experimental techniques for recording from single nerve cell
s.\nA detailed knowledge of neural coding and cell biology is not required
