DESCRIPTION:There is a fierce debate among academic economists about the m
 ost appropriate way of dealing with the current deficit and debt problems.
  The paper reviews the main economic arguments in this debate and consider
 s the consequences of the way the general public perceives and makes sense
  of these arguments about the austerity strategy.\n\nDr Yiannis Kitromilid
 es is an Associate Member of the Cambridge Centre for Economic and Public 
 Policy\, Department of Land Economy\, University of Cambridge. He had prev
 iously taught at the University of Greenwich\, University of Westminster\,
  University of Middlesex\, and at the School of Oriental and African Studi
 es\, University of London. His main research interests include economics o
 f climate change\, economic policymaking\, nationalisation of banking\, an
 d the shortcomings and limitations of deficit reduction policies. He has p
 ublished in these areas in academic journals and contributed to edited boo
 ks.\n
