DESCRIPTION:"The centres of most galaxies\, including our own Milky Way\,
are thought to harbour supermassive black holes that are millions of times
more massive than our Sun. Occasionally\, these black holes swallow larg
e amounts of gas\; this leads to huge outbursts of energy and enables us t
o see galaxies out the edge of the Universe. Until recently\, we had very
little evidence that such an outburst might have happened in the Milky Wa
 y. In this talk\, I will describe the story of how my colleagues and I di
scovered and interpreted the 'fossil imprint' of an explosion at the heart
of our Galaxy that occurred about two million years ago."
