DESCRIPTION:The greatest burden of surgically treatable diseases falls on
people in developing countries\, yet the poorest third of people receive o
nly 3.5% of operations and have the lowest numbers of surgeons per head of
population. These statistics\, combined with the emphasis on reducing glo
bal deaths from infectious diseases\, make surgery appear to be a neglecte
d specialty within the current global health arena. CU Surgical Society\,
in collaboration with CU Global Health\, have invited Mr Andy Leather to s
peak at the Clinical School on the the emerging concept of surgical care a
 s a population-based\, affordable\, and globally relevant issue. \n\nMr Le
ather is the Director of the King’s Centre for Global Health. He was app
ointed as a Consultant Surgeon at King’s College Hospital in 1996 and is
an honorary Senior Lecturer in Global Health at King’s College London.
His work focusses primarily on translational research in fragile states\,
capacity building partnerships in developing countries\, and global health
  education. \n\nMore here:\nhttp://www.kcl.ac.uk/aboutkings/worldwide/init

hat you will join us for what promises to be an exciting and informative e
 vent.\n\nAll welcome.
