 £10) at this talk._\n\nPrimates and rain-forests in South-east Asia are d
eclining rapidly. Over 40 years their ecology and behaviour has been docum
ented\, along with the loss of forests. Conservation needs to embrace prot
ection of key habitats\, especially watersheds\, and sustainable managemen
t of large areas\, so that 50 % of the land area can be kept forested. Shi
fting cultivation and selective logging have roles to play\, but monocultu
res are a real threat. Translocation and reintroduction have increasing ro
les to play in preventing extinction. Education of peoples\, locally and
globally\, and of governments\, are crucial. Discussion centres on the gr
eat variety of small apes - gibbons - and on the one great ape - the orang
 -utan.
