DESCRIPTION:Thermonuclear fusion is the power source of the stars and has
the potential to be an almost inexhaustible source of clean\, renewable en
ergy. Experiments on the National Ignition Facility at the Lawrence Liverm
ore Laboratory in California are now tantalisingly close to achieving the
ignition of a fusion plasma\, but there is still a long way to go before t
his inertial fusion approach can be become a realistic energy source. In t
his lecture Professor Chittenden describes how computer simulations are be
ing utilised in circumventing some of nature's obstacles and helping us ed
ge closer towards achieving ignition.\n\nThe talk is *free* for CUPS membe
rs\, *£2* for non-members\, and will be followed by a wine reception.
