DESCRIPTION:It is widely recognized that long-term changes in the Earth's 
 climate system and ecosystems exhibit abrupt changes\, thresholds and nonl
 inearities in their behaviour. In this talk\, the different types of abrup
 t changes in the climate system and ecosystems and the forcing-response re
 lationship producing them will be reviewed. The usefulness of change-point
  detection techniques to identify these abrupt changes will be demonstrate
 d through applications. Finally\, future development needs will be discuss
 ed.\n
