DESCRIPTION:The UK Government has recently published a strategy and roadma
p for R&D to support a UK nuclear programme out to 2050. This long term po
licy provides fresh impetus to work towards the realisation of new reactor
technologies in the UK\, including Generation IV systems\, opening the do
or to newer applications including more sustainable fuel cycles and waste
management. Nearer term Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) provide a more flex
ible scale of electricity generation at potentially reduced capital cost.
The lecture will highlight the novel features and applications of these r
eactor concepts. It will review briefly the current status of the Gen IV
designs\, considering their R&D requirements with particular reference to
those pertinent to the reactor fuel and fuel cycle. It will discuss some
our (AMEC’s) R&D interests\, centred on the ANSWERS radiation transport
codes developments and illustrate with some particular examples.
