SUMMARY: Above\, below\, and within solar flares - Dr. Hugh Hudson (Univer
sity of Glasgow / University of California\, Berkeley)

DESCRIPTION:In the conventional view\, flare energy accumulates in the ele
ctromagnetic field of the corona prior to its sudden and bursty release. T
his kind of behavior appears in other astronomical systems composed of pla
smas\, and the solar case is one that we can resolve telescopically and st
udy via imaging spectroscopy - even stereoscopically - over a very broad e
nergy range. I will discuss a small part of the current flood of data from
an amazing array of telescopes and detectors. The newest discoveries rang
e from the detection of MeV-energy neutral atoms near Earth\, to the "tail
-wags-the-dog" flare acoustic waves in the solar interior. The presentatio
n will be mainly observational\, and focused on the electrodynamics of the
  flare energy and mass cycles.
