DESCRIPTION:After 50 years of research and development\, the modern indust
rial laser takes on many forms. With high efficiencies\, power levels in t
he TW range\, and pulse widths below the magical electron-phonon timescale
s of materials\, the current capabilities of modern lasers are quite breat
h-taking. This talk will discuss the research currently being pursued with
in the university\, and how lasers are being used in a range of novel indu
strial applications that are set to transform the global manufacturing lan
dscape.\n \n*Professor Bill O’Neill* is a Professor of Laser Engineering
within the Cambridge University Engineering Department and Director of th
e Centre of Industrial Photonics. He has written over 170 research publica
tions and scientific papers on the subject of laser-matter interactions\,
optical engineering\, laser based manufacturing technologies\, and micro/n
ano fabrication techniques. \n \nTime: Refreshments served from 18.30. *Ta
lk starts at 19.00*. Ends around 20.30 following questions and discussion.
There will also be an opportunity for a short tour of some of the laborat
ories at the IfM.\n \nVenue: Institute for Manufacturing\, Cambridge Unive
 rsity\, Alan Reece Building\, 17 Charles Babbage Road\, Cambridge CB3 0FS
 ("directions":http://www.ifm.eng.cam.ac.uk/contact/). There is ample free
parking in the IfM's carpark beside the building\; the carpark entrance is
just past the IfM's service road.\n \nFree to attend. Booking not require
 d. All welcome.\n \nThis talk is open to the public and is suitable for st
udents and engineers. You are encouraged to bring with you colleagues\, fr
iends and family who are interested in engineering and lasers.\n\nDetails
