DESCRIPTION:I will discuss the neuronal mechanisms for perceptual grouping
. When a new stimulus appears\, the visual system quickly registers simple
and complex features in a first phase of feedforward processing. This is
followed by a second recurrent „attentive” phase where feedback and ho
rizontal corticocortical connections come in play that label the image ele
ments of one perceptual object with enhanced neuronal activity. I will sho
w data indicating that feedforward and feedback processing rely on differe
nt glutamate receptors and on processing in different cortical layers.
