DESCRIPTION:Significant amounts of nitrogen are deposited on to land in va
rious forms of excreta and the subsequent volatilization may result in sub
stantial emissions of atmospheric ammonia (NH3). As a model system\, the g
lobal NH3 emission of seabirds was calculated to examine the effects of cl
imate on NH3 volatilization. To do this\, a contemporary seabird database
was used in conjunction with a seabird NH3 model (GUANO) to estimate NH3 e
missions from seabirds in a range of climates. Field measurements of NH3
emissions at seabird colonies in various climates were used to validate mo
del output. The results present a range of excreted nitrogen that volatil
izes (Pv) of 0.4 % to 70.6 % in response to climatic differences. This mo
del is further developed to estimate NH3 emission from agricultural animal
manure and to characterize the effect of climate on Pv globally.
