DESCRIPTION:Rapid expansion of agriculture in the tropics has resulted in 
 high rates of rainforest loss and fragmentation in many countries. Convers
 ion of forest to agriculture\, such as oil palm plantation\, usually resul
 ts in a dramatic reduction in biodiversity and fundamental shifts in the f
 unctioning of tropical ecosystems. We will discuss what can be done to con
 serve global biodiversity while also maintaining ecosystem functioning and
  productivity in tropical ecosystems.
