DESCRIPTION:Metagenomics is a relatively new technique to assay microbial
communities in laboratory and also natural settings. For the first time th
e genomes of many of the millions of previously uncharacterized species ca
n be explored at least partially. \n\nMetagenomics is fundamentally differ
ent from traditional genomics and requires new approaches that match the s
pecific data types and the data volume. \n\nLarge scale comparative analys
is of metagenomic data provides another unique opportunity for learning le
ssons about microbial biology\, but also presents a significant number of
challenges to both bioinformatics and computer science. \n\nI will provide
a lessons learned that summarizes some of the pitfalls encountered in rec
ent years as well as new technologies developed to overcome those problems
 . \n\nRelated Links: http://metagenomics.anl.gov - MG-RAST \n\n
