DESCRIPTION:We outline some aspects of deterministic phase retrieval\, nam
ely the reconstruction of wavefield phase from intensity measurements. Att
ention is focused on methods employing the so-called transport-of-intensit
y equation\, this being the continuity equation associated with the paraxi
al (parabolic) equation. Applications in electron microscopy\, x-ray imag
ing\, neutron optics and superfluidity will be discussed. We will also br
iefly outline the importance of topological defects in the phase\, namely
screw dislocations and domain walls\, on the question of deterministic pha
 se retrieval.
