DESCRIPTION:The past months have been filled with various revelations abou
t NSA generalized surveillance. That information are added to massive comm
ercial usage of private information anse the increasing usage of algorithm
s to control larger component of our fundamental rights (freedom of speech
\,right to privacy\, freedom of thought\, …) pose crucial question not
only for humanities or political science\, but also to « hard » sciences
. All these control tools are developed by computer scientist and develope
rs that are somewhat finding themselves in the feet of the of the physicis
t of the middle of XX century. It is therefore mandatory to develop and et
hic and an epistemology of algorithms for people who develop them. This is
indeed a huge task and will need a multi-disciplinary approach. The goal
of this talk is to discuss about these questions.\n\nBio: Kavé Salamatian
is a full professor at University of Savoie. His main areas of researches
are Internet measurement and modeling\, and networking information theory
. He was previously reader at Lancaster University\, UK and associate prof
essor at University Pierre et Marie Curie. Kavé has graduated in 1998 fro
m Paris SUD-Orsay university where he worked on joint source channel codin
g applied to multimedia transmission over Internet for his Phd.\nIn a form
er life\, he graduated with a MBA\, and worked on market floor as a risk a
nalyst and enjoyed being an urban traffic modeler for some years. He is wo
rking these day on figuring out if networking is a science or just a hobby
and if it is a science what are its fundamentals.\n
